I also took the chance to add a small new feature. You can now set, that the tool should avoid ambigious characters. It’s pretty easy because it just leaves I and O out of the character base. This is by the way a feature that was requested by user who gave me feedback!

this weekend I have uploaded a new version of PwGen Pro to Apple for approval. The new version number is 1.1 and it includes some bugfixes and a new feature.

NEW:

• “Repeater” is a new function to generate and store passwords. It takes a base password and a target and generates a password from these two. The same combination of base and target will always result in the same generated password.
  If you use mysecretbase as base password you could use the URL of a website as target to get a hash value based on this two words. It will always be the same as long as you use the same base and target.
• The number of generated passwords can now be set more detailed in lower regions. (1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5)

FIXES

• The about text was editable
• The settings icon was changed a little bit

This is a free upgrade for all who purchased PwGen Pro.

Just a few minutes ago, the first review of PwGen Pro was released. Marc Thomalla from the german iPhone Application blog appsblog.de has reviewed the application and gave it a very good score as I interprete it.

Secure passwords are essential in our digital life to don’t make it easier than necessary for the bad guys. With PwGen you have an app at hand that generates secure passwords in seconds and send it to you  via e-mail – even a lot of passwords at once.

First thing you should do is to go to the settings and select the type of the passwords. The following options are available:

• Uppercase characters
• Lowercase characters
• Numbers
• Special characters
• Length (4-22)
• Count (1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100)

After that you go back to the “Generator” and get your passwords. You can generate a new set every time you press the “Generate” button in the top right corner. The phonetic passwords can be pronounced but it needs some glibness  sometimes.

A function that is called “reseed” generates passwords by moving the iPhone / touch. At the end of the process a loud bell rings (I was near to an heart-attack the first time…).

PwGen Pro is also available without the Pro as free version; the Pro version has the advantage of being completely localized to german language and that you can set almost all settings directly in the application instead of leaving the application and set them in the settings application of the device.

The generated passwords can be send via the mail client – a very convenient feature.

- Conclusion -

PwGen Pro convinces me with the really good passwords, which are pronounceable if you wish, that can be remembered though. Sending the passwords via e-mail is handy and supersedes to write them down.

First thing is to generate a new password each time you shake your phone. I’m not sure how I can implement that in the interface but I think I will find a solution.

Second thing is to send the passwords via SMS. I’m not sure about this one because I don’t see the use of it. But maybe someone needs it and it shouldn’t be to much hassle to bring that in.

A bigger change will be the rewrite of the generation algorithm. I want to bring in some advanced features to it and this makes it necessary to rewrite the generator.

Another thing I think about is which features I should to backport to the free version and when should I do that.

version 1.0.1 of PwGen Pro is in the AppStore now. This version fixes some bugs that where in version 1.0. The inline settings wor as expected now and the “mail all passwords in one e-mail” too.

• In-App settings – You can now set most of the applications settings directly inside the application. No need to leave it and go to settings applications just for changing character set for example.
• Phonetic passwords – PwGen Pro can create human readable passwords. This should it make much easier for people to remember the passwords without loosing too much safety.
• The Reseed view was completely rewritten. It gives you more feedback about the progress and what actually happens now.
• The interface was reorganized to get the new features in.
  
• PwGen Pro is fully translated to german language.
