Apple changed AppStore [update]

Posted: September 29th, 2008 | Author: | Filed under: Apple | Tags: , , | Comments Off on Apple changed AppStore [update]

This weekend, Apple has changed the behavior of the AppStore. Number one is the comment change. In “the old days” everyone with an iTunes account could comment and rate an application. Fortunately, this is history now. Apple has changed this and now you can only rate an application if you actually bought it. I hope that really keeps that trolls away that rate an application with 1 star because it is too expensive in their eyes.

The second change is not that nice. Apple removed the “All iPhone applications”, “All iPod touch applications” and the “All free applications” links. Bad decision!

I mean, how can one keep an overview if you don’t have the ability to check for new apps? It also seems like the pinchmedia RSS feeds fetched their data from this pages!? I didn’t get any updates from this feeds since friday what is pretty strange. I can’t believe, that now new apps where released this weekend!?

I really hope that Apple makes overview links available again. Without them, the AppStore will become unusable.

A lot of ideas made their way through the net, why Apple is acting like it actually does. Many of them say, Apple is stupid and needs some time to check that they are on the wrong road. I really hope so, but can such a company be that stupid?

Macrumors just posted a page where feeds for the AppStore are available. Check out http://appshopper.com.

AppStore – iTunes sync rant

Posted: September 24th, 2008 | Author: | Filed under: Apple | Tags: , , , | Comments Off on AppStore – iTunes sync rant

Hi,

I just noted, that iTunes syncs your iTunes account to the iPhone. Well, that sounds not that critical on the first read but it becomes very odd if you don’t know the consequences.

Here is the situation. I have a german iTunes account as I live in Germany. From time to time, I check out the US store to see the US comments for PwGen. By the way, it’s a pity that it is not possible for AppStore developers to review *all* comments from all stores! But back to the story.

If you set your iTunes store to US for example and forget to set it back to german you will have a very (at least for me) strange behavior on your iPhone. The AppStore will be set to US! On my iPhone I have now the US prices in dollar and not longer the EURO prices. That is not the bad thing, because I know corresponding prices. What really is a mess, is that you can’t by anything because the AppStore tries to buy the apps in the US store. Even worse is, that you can’t set the AppStore back to german. This is only possible by setting the correct store in iTunes and sync your phone.

This is not really a solution if you are far away from your “sync-station”. I think Apple will sell this as feature but IMHO this is really an annoying bug. *narf*

firmware 2.1 improvements

Have you noticed that with firmware 2.1, the application update process was massively improved? What I really like is the speed with which new applications are installed. Even better is, that the device places the update app at the exact same position as the old version was! Isn’t that cool. 😉

I mean how annoying was it to rearrange your apps after each update. Especially if you have more than 2 pages with applications.

PwGen Pro?

Posted: September 15th, 2008 | Author: | Filed under: My Applications, PwGen | Tags: , , , | 1 Comment »

I just started a new poll concerning PwGen. I got some feature requests in the last weeks which made me think about a pro version. Normally I don’t like the practice of lite and pro versions but sadly there is no other way of publishing similar programs with different feature sets.

Anyway, if you are using PwGen and if you want a particular feature. Give your vote in the new poll on the right side and leave me a comment with the feature you miss. Here is a short list of requests I already received:

  • human readable passwords
  • better control over used characters (at least two numbers per password etc.)
  • password storage
If you have other ideas, let me know.

Feature poll closed

Hi,

the poll for the “quick-password” feature is now closed. Even if there where only 12 answers, the result is clear. The feature will be implemented in the next version. I’m not sure how it will look like but I’ll keep you informed.

Thanks to all who voted and stay tuned for the next version.

Firmware 2.1 on friday

Posted: September 10th, 2008 | Author: | Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , | 2 Comments »

Yesterday, Apple had it’s “Let’s rock” event. They introduced new iPod nano and an overhauled iPod touch. For me, the most interesting news was the announcement of iPhone firmware 2.1 which should be available on friday.

Apple says it’s much more stable (no more crashes of third party apps!?) and increases the battery lifetime dramatically. Even the backup process should become much faster. I’m very curious about this update. But not today? ^^

Hi,

the poll about a quick-password feature in PwGen 1.3 will be closed by the end of the week. Currently it looks like it will come in the next version. If you want to make sure, that it will be in or if you are totally against it, tell other people to vote for you. 😉

Hello,

this morning I got the acceptance mail notification from Apple, that PwGen 1.2 has been published to the AppStore. The new version contains some bugfixes concerning e-mails and has a new feature that allows you to send the complete list of generated passwords in one single e-mail.

PwGen Feature Poll

Posted: September 2nd, 2008 | Author: | Filed under: My Applications, PwGen | Tags: , | Comments Off on PwGen Feature Poll

Hello,

in version 1.1 of PwGen I moved the settings from the program to the settings application. There are some other password generators on the market which all have the settings in the application itself.

Now I ask you, if you want a quick-password feature where you can set the most important features for a password temporarily until the program ends.

You can give your vote on the poll on the right side and I’m very curios about your answers.

Waiting for PwGen 1.2

Posted: September 1st, 2008 | Author: | Filed under: Blog, My Applications, PwGen | Tags: , | Comments Off on Waiting for PwGen 1.2

Yesterday evening I submitted version 1.2 of PwGen to Apple. No I’m waiting for the Review. Normally this takes around 8 days.
Version 1.2 contains some bugfixes concerning the e-mail feature. There is no default receiver pre-filled anymore and all kinds of passwords can be send now. The new feature in this version is about e-mail, too. You can send now the complete list of generated in a single e-mail.
This feature was implemented after several users requested it.
